HOW I STARTED MY JOURNEY
14 is the jersey number that started my journey with baseball. More than an American pasttime, we incorporate baseball into the distinct Vietnamese everyday life. On our field, abandoned outfield grass grew taller than us, and baseballs disappeared into the bushes. Our metal bats were mistaken for gang weapons, yet our community of fewer than a hundred players treated the cracked lot like an MLB diamond. In Hanoi, playing baseball meant improvising. Organizing local tournaments, I mapped the community’s every nook and cranny. When rain flooded our field, I brought competing teams together with shovel and firefighter crews: shovels cleared the mud while firemen pumped out water. I even turned unpopular baseball jerseys into a fashion trend among my friends.

Baseball - Hanoi Ams Phoenix
Introduced into Vietnam just 15 years ago, baseball is new-yet fits right in with the community. Baseball grew with the 5 clubs of the city, surviving not in decked facilities but through bonds formed. Through such an unpopular lens of baseball, I get to know more people, more stories, more meanings of playing sports. Leading a club full of newbies, the joy and unique experience is what binds my team and others together!

Like two bulls charging and strengthening each other,
